Why Did 1,500 People Try To Take Guns On Planes?

130102093602-tsa-guns-story-topOther than the IRS, can you think of one government agency more hated then the TSA? We’ve all seen the videos of small children and old ladies being searched and detained. We’ve all been in line watching them tear through the luggage of someone who dared to try and sneak a soda in their bag. How can any of that possibly make sense? Do they actually stop weapons from getting on planes, or is this all a show?

Well, in 2012 the TSA discovered 1,500 cases of people trying to get firearms on planes. 1,500! Who, in this day and age, thinks they can bring a gun on a plane? You can’t even bring nail clippers!

CNN has the story:

In 2012 more than 1,500 firearms were discovered by screeners at airport checkpoints, TSA spokesman David Castelveter said. That is an average of more than four weapons a day.

A total of 1,320 firearms were found in 2011. Many were loaded, and some had rounds in the chamber.

“We do assume that the vast majority of weapons that come through are (from) people who didn’t know they couldn’t carry them on or were not aware they were in the bag,” [TSA spokesman] Castelveter said.

I really want to meet some of the people. How could they not know?

  1. I always thought you could check in your firearm. You just had to call ahead notify them show them you can legally own the weapon. Not sure if the weapon is flown with luggage or separate airplane.

    • Yep, you can notify the airline and put it in your luggage. These were people who had the gun on their person or carry on!

      • Lol As absurd as it may seem I can understand forgetting it. Yes it’s a gun. But some people are so used to carrying it and have so much going on that they get distracted I can see them forgetting it. Yes I know it sounds crazy.

Obviously you should be extra careful handling and carrying a gun. You should obviously know you are entering an airport. My point is that I’ve heard of more crazy things. If that makes any sense. Lol

I think you’d have to be a special kind of stupid to “forget” you had a loaded firearm anywhere, let alone in your carry-on baggage. They should start implementing fines for attempting to carry on prohibited items. People will learn really quick. Security lines will move more quickly and the TSA will generate a little extra $$ to cover the astronomical costs of trying to protect us from psychos.
