Today, in a monologue on Morning Joe, Joe Scarborough (R, Florida) explained how the Newtown massacre has changed his mind on gun control. Scarborough, a long time supporter of gun rights, makes an impassioned case for gun control, cultural change, and improved mental health capabilities. I urge you to watch it, and share it with your friends and family especially gun owners and gun rights supporters.
I wrote a similar piece on Friday. I too, was a passionate gun rights advocate. The old arguments I used to make now ring hollow. I used to say things like, “This is the price of freedom,” or, “guns don’t kill people, people do,” and “the criminals would just find another way to kill.” No longer.
We must, as a society, be able to change our cherished beliefs in light of new evidence. What more evidence do we need than 20 dead children, massacred for no reason, to change our minds?
Gun rights advocates will not listen to liberal gun control advocates. They just wont. Liberals are, if not the enemy, stupid and annoying and out to destroy their freedoms. The only people gun rights advocates might listen to are people like Scarborough and myself: other gun rights advocates, or former ones at any rate. I, like Scarborough, hope to share my story of how I changed my mind. The violence must stop. As Joe says later in the show, we can’t do anything for Newtown, but we can save the next 20.
