Robert Reich articulates the Democratic position in the Fiscal Cliff negotiations in eight demands. The most troubling is his demand that Democrats, “Don’t cut the safety net.” Reich knows full and well that we spend twice as much per-person on medical care as the next country, Switzerland, with poor results. There is a gold mine of efficiencies to be had within Medicare and Medicaid.
Reich should be pushing Democrats to reduce healthcare inflation, not making blanket statements about cutting the safety net for the needy. If we could just spend as much per-person as Switzerland (#2 in per-capita spending worldwide) we would get the entire Defense department for free. That’s how much we spend on healthcare.
